Even if you are not here for very long, the people you meet, in your hostel or resort will be able to tell many tales of travel and life that you yourself have not encountered. People from all sorts of walks of life.
Koh Phangan has a special energy, maybe it is because it is more free than our western homes, we feel we can do or become anything we wish for, and hence this is why people can come here and totally transform themselves.
If you like, you don’t need to tell anyone about your former life, and it can be the complete opposite to the life of which you choose to live here.
A high powered banker with a flash house and car to match may choose to live on Koh Phangan in floaty whites and indulge in tantric practises whilst living on one hundred baht a day. Do you think he secretly misses his ‘stuff’ though?
A struggling seamstress working three jobs just to survive and push forward with her designing passion finds that she can now make a living and become quite well known as a costume designer on this magical island! She may never tell anyone how hard she has had to work back home though…
You can choose to completely reinvent yourself if you want to! You can be like the above and not divulge your past or you can also choose to be proud of where you came from!
You may hear stories of people being able to live better with an illness here on this beautiful island, the heat, the nature, the air, can all help with ailments brought on by getting older and other illnesses. People are able to live a more fulfilled, improved quality of life which they never would've dreamed of back in their colder home country.
Maybe it is because this place is so small? It is not as saturated with singers, musicians and artists like big cosmopolitan cities so you may find it easier to get better recognition if you stay on Koh Phangan. Finally some credit for all of your hard work over the years, with an amazing life here on paradise island.
It can work the opposite way as well, maybe you are really well known for what you do back home or you have a very responsible job but here you can remain anonymous.
Maybe you find it happens organically, that actually you never knew you liked to party and dance so much, but being on Koh Phangan makes you want to express yourself for what you truly are.
You never knew you liked birds and trees and nature so much, but then you never had the chance to be surrounded by so much of it before now. You may find that this island will help transform your life forever, even if you have to leave to go home.
