Name: Ron Kush
D.O.B.: 6/5/78
Country: UK
Gender: Male
Occupation: DJ / Producer / Engineer
Ron Kush was born in the late 70's and raised in London, England. In the late nineties he attained a degree in sound engineering and music technology and got involved with some of London’s most prestigious recording studios producing and engineering tracks for people like Toni Braxton, All Saints, Evelyn King, and Lily Allen to name a few.
During the mid to late nineties, he was crossing various genres, working on the Social Circles and Industry Standard labels, and producing his own music in the UK house and garage scene; as a result, he became one of the most sought after engineer and producers in the scene.
Kush is known to be a musical chameleon because all the while he has achieved most success producing house music under a number of different names. . Today, Ron is known as one of the best ghost producers in the house scene. His distinguished DJ'ing style, enthusiasm, and superior mixing skills have him playing at some of the world’s biggest clubs across the globe.
Recently, in 2013, Ron gained 3 resident DJ positions in Ibiza, one at the amazing newly refurbished Eden nightclub, Ministry Of Sound Ibiza, and CC @ Sankeys. At the same time he launched his Lost in Ibiza boat party brand which is now Ibiza’s #1 underground house boat party.
This year, he has several anticipated tracks on some of the scene’s biggest labels, including Defected & Hot Trax.
And so it seems, 2014 may be the year that house music’s very own chameleon sheds the disguise and sets the scene alight with his own colourful brand of underground dance music. We are very lucky, and please to have been given the chance to interview Ron in the face of such a busy schedule, for the sake of having in hand his Koh Phangan story to share with everyone.
What is your Koh Phangan story?
My Koh Phangan story is really in its infancy, but it’s one I hope to continue to grow over time. It’s such a magical island and somewhere I feel most at home with especially from a musical perspective. I’ve heard the phrase "Asia's answer to Ibiza" mentioned a few times and that’s something I can relate to having spent a fair bit of time there. It’s a place where real house music thrives but I think it has its own special qualities that separates it from Ibiza. I have met so many great people in Phangan so far, People with such enthusiasm and dedication to their music and way of life. So it’s somewhere that really appeals to me on so many levels and a place that I've quickly fallen in love with.
What do you feel you can bring to the Phangan scene?
I’ve heard pretty much all of the Phangan resident DJ's since coming over from Ibiza and each of them have their own unique style which is great to see. I think coming from a place like Ibiza where I was subjected to so many diverse sounds over time and witnessed what fuels big crowds into a dance floor frenzy. Coming in from this angle I feel I can bring yet another twist of diversity to the already fantastic line up of artists plying their trade on the island.
What are projects are you currently involved with / what are your next projects?
Well at the moment there are quite a few fingers in a few pies! The main priory at the moment is continuing to build and grow the Kushpig brand that kicked off with the construction of a new fully featured studio I recently set up with my good friend Alfie Moonpig over in Samui. So at the moment our main goal is to help and assist all the talented artists on the islands in taking their productions to the next level. I acquired a degree in Sound engineering some years ago and have been ghost writing for many big artists for well over a decade now. So helping fellow producers grow and reach their goals is something that really interests me.
So to any producers (on the islands and beyond) reading this and looking for help in this area check out our Facebook page.
Along with this, I continue to help with the Lost In Ibiza boat parties, with our Label Ulybug records and now I also have some stuff in the pipeline to start working with the Moon Island Records guys which is something I'm really looking forward to……
Do you find Koh Phangan to be a good place for your project/s?
The thing I love about Phanang is the diversity and beauty of the place, its somewhere where your creativity has no bounds. So many great and unique parties, so much vibe and with it so many ideas for current and future projects. A wonderful place for creative minds……
Where is your favourite place here?
Has to be The Jungle Experience for me. Having played and witnessed huge events across the globe, there is nothing quite like the Jungle Experience. For me its hands down the best party in Asia, just an incredible show, amazing vibe and the setting deep in the jungle makes it one of the most special places I have ever played in the world! On top of that its run by people who put their heart and soul into each event and that’s something that really shines through every time. This kind of love and dedication is what has made the Jungle Experience what it is today! A truly unique experience!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully still alive! I will certainly be a lot greyer with far fewer hairs on my head that I have now. I’m pretty sure I will still be involved in the music scene, I will certainly still be producing as this is my life and soul. Who knows? Things are looking really good at the moment, have loads of production projects underway and already quite a few tracks being signed to some major labels, so for now I'm looking towards the next year and taking it one year at a time. The Zimmer frame is at the ready though!
